History Biographical Freda Victoria Hayman, nee McKenzie (1913-1992), was born in Alix, Alberta. Her parents were Alice Thornburn McKenzie and William Alexander H. McKenzie, and her brothers were Charles McKenzie and Harold McKenzie. After the McKenzie family moved to Ladner in 1918, William McKenzie operated a jewelry store and optometrist shop on Delta Street. They resided on King Edward Street, now 45th Avenue. Freda McKenzie Hayman attended Ladner Elementary School, then King George V High School, graduating in 1929. She obtained her teacher's certificate in 1930. She taught school in Delta, and her first assignment was teaching at the one room Crescent Island School where she taught grades one to six to a class of twenty-one students. She attended Ladner United Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was a leader of a Canadian Girls in Training group. In the 1930's she moved to Pinchi Lake and later to Trail before returning to Ladner to teach at Kennedy Superior School in North Delta and Ladner Elementary School in Ladner. She married Jack Hayman in 1941 and they had a daughter, Charlene, in 1944. Charlene married Jack Hope and they have two children, Shaun and Kim. On her husband's retirement, they moved to Denman Island and Freda Hayman taught for a short time at Royston on Vancouver Island. On her husband's death in 1983, Freda returned to Ladner, where she was an active member of the Kinette Club and a supporter and docent at the Delta Museum and Archives.
Acquisition Source Donations of all accessions by Freda Hayman, except Accession 1992-018 which was donated by Charlene Hope on behalf of the Estate of Freda Hayman.
Scope Content The fonds consists of hand written and typed research notes about Delta's history, docent scripts, and newspaper clippings created or collected by Freda Hayman while she worked as a volunteer at the Delta Museum and Archives; Delta Museum and Archives records such as minutes and agendas from meetings; collected personal and family papers such as William McKenzie's booklets, music books, and other ephemera; and photographs of students, teachers, family and friends. The fonds is arranged in four series: Delta Museum and Archives records, Personal papers, Photographs, and Research notes.

Scope Content File contains 1930 invitation to the first annual banquet of the Delta EX-High Club addressed to Freda McKenzie, weekly offering envelopes to the Ladner Methodist Church 1923, membership card to the British Columbia Boys and Girls Peace League 1922, Christmas cards, Christmas calendar 1905, pamphlet describing War Savings Certificates with stamps 1942, and calling card for Mrs. Stillman with description of Stillman family.
