About the Archives

Delta Archives proactively solicits and acquires community records of enduring value and makes them easily accessible in a variety of formats in order to provide access to information about Delta and its residents, promote and foster community identity, and preserve the history of Delta for current and future generations.

The Archives also serves as the official repository for Corporation of Delta records. The DMAS acquires municipal records created, received and accumulated during the course of practical civic activity by Council, and any department, office, committee, board, commission or agency of the Corporation of Delta.

Brief History

First established in 1968 and then later in 1969 incorporated as a non-profit organization, the Delta Historical and Museum Society’s main purpose, and where it initially focused much of its energy and resources, was in the setting up of a museum. The person who headed up this grass-roots society and was duly elected as the first chairperson to the Board of Trustees was Edgar Dunning. By 1979, the Society, in wanting to address a community desire to expand its services into archival collections, added an archives and officially sought a change of name to the Delta Museum and Archives Society (DMAS).
From 1979 until 2010, DMAS’ archival services operated out of the museum, a Tudor-style building located at 4858 Delta Street in the heart of Ladner Village. However, with an increasing need for more space with improved storage conditions, the archives relocated in 2011 to its current home, adjacent the Corporation of Delta’s Municipal Hall. The archives new quarters, situated at 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent, were officially named the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room.
Today, with broader recognition of being the Delta community’s repository for historic records and documents, the DMAS has also become the official custodians of Delta’s municipal records. The process of transferring the Corporation of Delta’s records to the Archives will commence in 2012.
